Developing the Podcasts

Hi everyone,

Aaron Kenedy here, and its my first time actually using the wiki (to my horrible shame), so bear with me if I get it wrong.

This document is about my desire to develop Moot’s podcasting service. So far, it has been used as a means of enabling those who cannot attend services to access the content of the homilies. I would like to widen that focus to include a monthly discussion about some aspect of what it means to be people of faith in the context of wider society. The discussion would take the form of an interview of someone with something interesting to say. See a list of potential interviewees below. There would be an exchange between the subject, their area of interest/expertise, and the values and concerns of the Moot community. It will be the resposibility of the interviewer to represent the interests of the community.

Mission:
To serve the Moot community through the exploration of relevant issues regarding faith in relation to society, politics, justice, and culture.

Possible interviewees:
Ian Mobsby
Jonathan Bartley
Jonathon Aitken
Michael Warner (St. Paul’s)
Bishop of London
Archbishop of Canterbury
Bishop of Chicago
Pete Rollins
Sally Alsford
Heythrop Staff?
Local MP
Ed Hussein (tj@uksbd.co.uk)
Mike Radcliffe, Sarah DeNordwall, Peter

Rationale for interview topics:
These will reflect the general interests of the Moot Community, the interviewer and the interviewee. They will relate with current affairs, ask theological questions and confront theological difficulties. Importantly, they will seek to affirm faith at its most basic level, albeit in a way that doesn’t flinch from difficult questions or disarming possibilities. They will require the exercise of a common sense, sceptical approach to all propositions of faith.

Possible questions/topics: (Obviously all questions asked will reflect the particular interests of the interviewee and current affairs.)

1. The role of faith groups/the Church in protesting civil rights abuses. E.g. China in Tibet, Darfur and Burma. Is it appropriate to use the Olympics as a platform for protest? What are the under-pinning theological concerns that should guide our actions?

2. Advancements in embryology. Ethical considerations with regard to hybrid embryos. Issues surrounding the sanctity of human genetics; are we made in God’s image?

BBC NEWS WEBSITE
The Bishop of Lichfield, the Rt. Revd Jonathan Gledhill, said: "It's a very important part of our society and a very important part of the Christian faith that you should have respect for human embryos.

"If you stop obeying God you start to limit the rights of human beings and this is a case in point."

3. Homosexuality in the Church: Issues surrounding biblical inerrancy and interpretation.

4. As part of the process we have invited the Archdeacon of Hackney to meet Moot to enable him to understand the community. Two meetings are planned:

1st Meeting
Venue: St Matthews Church Clergy House Dining Room & Drawing Room, entrance from St Anns Street door (buzzer for House) map here
Time: From 7.30pm Weds 30th April 2008
Subject: Moot Community meet the Archdeacon of Hackney in Westminster

 Coming & Dietry needs

 Not Coming

 1. Peters thoughts
Since I'll miss the November Community meeting (sorry, but I have to be in Sarajevo), I thought I'd add my thoughts here instead.
I strongly believe that moot needs to hold the three themes of mission, worship and community in balance. I therefore believe that we need to find a place that allows that. St. Matthews isa glorious place, and we've benefited greatly from being here. However, it has limitations, and in particular it's in the most expensive place on the planet. I don't believe that we can afford to do the kind of things we imagine for moot while we remain in Westminster.
For me it would be a real nuisance to move, because my work is just round the corner from StMW. However, I'm not constrained by that - a bicycle is a wonderful thing - so I'm content with any location that's within a 40-minute bike ride of Victoria. I am excited by the idea of moot moving to a part of London which is less comfortable and monied than Westminster, as it chimes with a thought that I had over the summer (and which I resist ... ). Ideally I'd like somewhere in South-West London because I live there. However, that's a different diocese, and I should not want us to abandon the Diocese of London. So I look to a plant from StMW to a venue in the Diocese of London (hence North of the river) that would allow us to develop our ideas for an inclusive dispersed community serviced by an intentional resident community. I fear the effect of "core" - that those who live in an intentional community will become separate from those who don't - but I think we can manage that risk. I am especially keen that in this phase of reflection and discernment we hear all the voices in moot; those who come less often to services because of location or child-care are important and we need to make sure that we don't unintentionally push them from the "occasional because of constraints" into the "sadly not, because of impossibility" state. So I hope the wiki and the blog, and texts and e-mails, and phonecalls and chats, will allow us all to get all the voices into the conversation. All in all, I think this could be a really exciting time for moot. We've turned a corner and this is a new street to walk down. Somewhere along it is our new home for a while. We have friends around town, including some who'll be staying at the old home. We have friends further afield who'll keep us challenged to be inclusive in new ways. And we're finding a new home somewhere along this new street, where we can live an new kind of open-door life as a community. If the garden has a few weeds and the house needs some work doing, that's fine as long as we can be warm and welcoming to those who need us - including ourselves. Prosaically, then, I'm for an explicit endorsement of a search along the lines of Option 3 of the "Discerning Moot's Future" paper. We can do more work on this, including the questions of where and what sort of place, during the weekend away.

See you then. Peter

2. Mike's Thought.
My thoughts are very simple. Option 3 is clearly the best. I don't really have much more to say in addition to that, as I think the paper that has been circulated is clear enough. There may be some difficulty with location, but I'm sure we can deal with that as we get to it. All problems can be resolved if there is the will to do so. Doubtless, the group will change in the move, but I think that will be for the better.

If you are a member of the Moot Community, and do not have access yet to this wiki - do subscribe using the link on the right tool bar - and one of us will sort out permissions for you to add your content.

Small & Big Service Rota

This page in addition to the service space for content - is for ensuring we have people to cover the elements of the service.
** Remember to utilise and follow the agreed service formats in the secure site - click here to access **
Small Service liturgies & guidance
Current term plan

 Date

 Leading

 Set up

 Tea/coffee

 April 6th - Little Service
Theme: Easter & Acceptance

 ?

 ?

 April 20th - Big Service
Theme: Easter & Acceptance

 ?

 ?

 ?

 May 4th - Little Service
Theme: Work & God

 Edward (Ian support)

 ?

 ?

 May 18th - Big Service
Theme: Work & God

 Peter R and "American help"

 ?

 ?

 1st June- Little Service
Theme: Affluenza

 Doerthe and Raewyn

 ?

 ?

 08th June - Big Service
Theme: Affluenza

 Tim and Trine

 ?

 ?

 6th July - Little Service
Theme:

 Andy

 ?

 ?

 20th Jul - Big Service
Theme:

 Aaron and ?

 ?

 ?

Home

COMMUNITY ORGANISATION

This Moot Community wiki site, is for developing thinking, planning and organisation of what we do in Moot. However stages 3 to 7 can vary in where they appear but need to be present.Again – how each element is done is a matter of interpretation – but it was agreed that the title should either be said or projected to ensure that people are aware of what is happening in the flow of the service. In this way we maintain our 'ancient:future' perspective. Any queries or concerns to raise with Ian. It is good practice to discuss service format in the planning meeting before the service. cellpadding="3" class="wp-border-all" width="100%">

Sin

<td align="center" pride is the belief that possession of such traits infers rights (to a good job, better pay…) or value…

Technological/scientific achievement,as the fruits of pride (Prometheus)?

Humility
(modesty, selflessness, giving of respect)

But what differs it from self-abasement or humiliation?

Lack of humility seen in misuse of science & technology.

"inordinate self-love is the cause of every sin ... the root of pride is found to consist in man not being, in some way, subject to God and His rule." Thomas Aquinas

"love of self perverted to hatred and contempt for one's neighbour." Dante

Mark 7

Paul’s conversion

Proverbs 16:1-20
Isaiah 14:3-21

Prov. 18:12
Prov 15:25-33

(Isaiah 55:8)

Philip 2:3-8 (humility)

See Milton!

Greed
(avarice, covetousness, materialism)

Excessive love of material wealth.

Calculating materialism - euphemisms: 'economic security'; ;'financial success' - mortgaging the present to secure the future?

Renders all value instrumental - a means to an end - nothing holds intrinsic value (whether spiritual, aesthetic, emotional etc)

Greed as idolatry

Condemnation of greed not same as condemnation of spiritual(?) value of earnt wealth, entepreunership or negates the power of money to do good?

Generosity
(vigilance, liberality)

Liberality - just acquisition and wise use of money to good end?

"it is a sin directly against one's neighbour, since one man cannot over-abound in external riches, without another man lacking them... it is a sin against God, just as all mortal sins, inasmuch as man contemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things." Thomas Aquinas

'If money be not thy servant it will be thy master. the covetous man cannot so propery be said to possess wealth , as that may be said to possess him.' Francis Bacon

'Nothing can be so hard for those who abound in riches as to conceive how others can be in want' Jonathan swift

'He who witholds a pennyworth of worldly goods from his neighbour, knowing him to be in need, is a robber in the sight of God... Further I declare, who spares a penny for himself to put it by against a rainy day, thinking, I may have need for that tomorrow, is a muderer before God' Meister Eckhart

Greek Legend of King Midas - dehumanizing power of greed?

Chaucer: The Pardoner's Tale (modernised TV versions?)

Matthew 6 (discourse of ostentation - "You can't serve both God and Mammon")
&
Luke 16:9-13 (The unjust steward)

'eye of a needle' discourse Mathew 19: 20-24?

Ecclesiastes 5:10-16 - 'the man who loves money can never have enough...'

Tale of the Golden Calf

I Timothy 6:9-10, 17-19

Isaiah 58 - nature of true fasts

Fallow & Jubilee years - Leviticus 25 - placing limits on greed/accumulation of wealth

Lust
(inappropriate / excessive desire, physical desire, obsession)

Excessive love of sensuality, sexual desire, physical pleasures... etc

Chastity
(purity, love, discipline)

Wrath
(anger, fury, hate, violence)

Uncontrolled passion?

Is not necessarily selfish - use of violence to achieve justice?

Patience
(composure, kindness, mercy, forbearance, compassion, peace)

"A passion of the sensitive appetite is good in so far as it is regulated by reason, whereas it is evil if it set the order of reason aside." Thomas Aquinas

"love of justice perverted to revenge and spite" Dante

Jesus' clearing of the temple... was this anger?

Envy
(jealousy)

... of possessions, characteristics, skills, spirituality...

... think advertising

Envy vs the desire for justice / equality?

Charity
(love, giving satisfaction, liberality)

"Charity rejoices in our neighbor's good, while envy grieves over it." Thomas Aquinas

"love of one's own good perverted to a desire to deprive other men of theirs." Dante

Gluttony
(over-indulgence, excessive consumption)

Excessive love of consumption - the consumerist society

Temperance
(self-restraint, moderation, abstinence)

"Gluttony denotes, not any desire of eating and drinking, but an inordinate desire... leaving the order of reason, wherein the good of moral virtue consists." Thomas Aquinas

Sloth
(laziness, melancholia, apathy, nihilism)

failure to love God and His works;

the absence or insufficiency of love

Zeal
(enthusiasm, diligence)

"sluggishness of the mind which neglects to begin good... [it] is evil in its effect, if it so oppresses man as to draw him away entirely from good deeds." Thomas Aquinas

Vice or Sin?
In many ways we would be better to refer to the seven deadly vices and their respective virtues. Vices and virtues are concepts derived from Greek philosophy, while sin comes from the Hebrew and New testaments. The former are character traits the later are traditionally considered specific acts. The seven deadly vices might therefore be the more appropriate term as ‘they are basic, perhaps universal human tendencies from which sins result… the vice of greed gives birth to the sin of theft’ (Schimmel: Seven Deadly Sins (1997)).

In Art & Literature
Where to start?
