1. Developing the Podcasts

Hi everyone,

Aaron Kenedy here, and its my first time actually using the wiki (to my horrible shame), so bear with me if I get it wrong.

This document is about my desire to develop Moot’s podcasting service. So far, it has been used as a means of enabling those who cannot attend services to access the content of the homilies. I would like to widen that focus to include a monthly discussion about some aspect of what it means to be people of faith in the context of wider society. The discussion would take the form of an interview of someone with something interesting to say. See a list of potential interviewees below. There would be an exchange between the subject, their area of interest/expertise, and the values and concerns of the Moot community. It will be the resposibility of the interviewer to represent the interests of the community.

Mission:
To serve the Moot community through the exploration of relevant issues regarding faith in relation to society, politics, justice, and culture.

Rationale for interview topics:
These will reflect the general interests of the Moot Community, the interviewer and the interviewee. They will relate with current affairs, ask theological questions and confront theological difficulties. Importantly, they will seek to affirm faith at its most basic level, albeit in a way that doesn’t flinch from difficult questions or disarming possibilities. They will require the exercise of a common sense, sceptical approach to all propositions of faith.

Possible questions/topics: (Obviously all questions asked will reflect the particular interests of the interviewee and current affairs.)

1. The role of faith groups/the Church in protesting civil rights abuses. E.g. China in Tibet, Darfur and Burma. Is it appropriate to use the Olympics as a platform for protest? What are the under-pinning theological concerns that should guide our actions?

2. Advancements in embryology. Ethical considerations with regard to hybrid embryos. Issues surrounding the sanctity of human genetics; are we made in God’s image?

Discerning for the future

I am pleased to say that we are making progress with the plan for Moot to be a church plant into a church in the central London Stepney area of the Diocese of London. As part of the process we have invited the Archdeacon of Hackney to meet Moot to enable him to understand the community. Two meetings are planned:

1. Peters thoughts
Since I'll miss the November Community meeting (sorry, but I have to be in Sarajevo), I thought I'd add my thoughts here instead.
I strongly believe that moot needs to hold the three themes of mission, worship and community in balance. I therefore believe that we need to find a place that allows that. St. Matthews isa glorious place, and we've benefited greatly from being here. However, it has limitations, and in particular it's in the most expensive place on the planet. I don't believe that we can afford to do the kind of things we imagine for moot while we remain in Westminster.
For me it would be a real nuisance to move, because my work is just round the corner from StMW. However, I'm not constrained by that - a bicycle is a wonderful thing - so I'm content with any location that's within a 40-minute bike ride of Victoria. I am excited by the idea of moot moving to a part of London which is less comfortable and monied than Westminster, as it chimes with a thought that I had over the summer (and which I resist ... ). Ideally I'd like somewhere in South-West London because I live there. However, that's a different diocese, and I should not want us to abandon the Diocese of London. So I look to a plant from StMW to a venue in the Diocese of London (hence North of the river) that would allow us to develop our ideas for an inclusive dispersed community serviced by an intentional resident community. I fear the effect of "core" - that those who live in an intentional community will become separate from those who don't - but I think we can manage that risk. I am especially keen that in this phase of reflection and discernment we hear all the voices in moot; those who come less often to services because of location or child-care are important and we need to make sure that we don't unintentionally push them from the "occasional because of constraints" into the "sadly not, because of impossibility" state. So I hope the wiki and the blog, and texts and e-mails, and phonecalls and chats, will allow us all to get all the voices into the conversation. All in all, I think this could be a really exciting time for moot. We've turned a corner and this is a new street to walk down. Somewhere along it is our new home for a while. We have friends around town, including some who'll be staying at the old home. We have friends further afield who'll keep us challenged to be inclusive in new ways. And we're finding a new home somewhere along this new street, where we can live an new kind of open-door life as a community. If the garden has a few weeds and the house needs some work doing, that's fine as long as we can be warm and welcoming to those who need us - including ourselves. Prosaically, then, I'm for an explicit endorsement of a search along the lines of Option 3 of the "Discerning Moot's Future" paper. We can do more work on this, including the questions of where and what sort of place, during the weekend away.

2. Mike's Thought.
My thoughts are very simple. Option 3 is clearly the best. I don't really have much more to say in addition to that, as I think the paper that has been circulated is clear enough. There may be some difficulty with location, but I'm sure we can deal with that as we get to it. All problems can be resolved if there is the will to do so. Doubtless, the group will change in the move, but I think that will be for the better.

This is a page that people who are planning a big service in the next month or two can add ideas - draw together stuff as well as put out requests for music etc... In 2004 Moot agreed with STMW that the order of our Big Service will follow the flow of an Anglican 'Service of the Word' with the following headings:

It was agreed that starting stages 1 to 2 need to be set and that the ending with stage 8. However stages 3 to 7 can vary in where they appear but need to be present.Again – how each element is done is a matter of interpretation – but it was agreed that the title should either be said or projected to ensure that people are aware of what is happening in the flow of the service. In this way we maintain our 'ancient:future' perspective. Any queries or concerns to raise with Ian. It is good practice to discuss service format in the planning meeting before the service. Vice or Sin?
In many ways we would be better to refer to the seven deadly vices and their respective virtues. Vices and virtues are concepts derived from Greek philosophy, while sin comes from the Hebrew and New testaments. The former are character traits the later are traditionally considered specific acts. The seven deadly vices might therefore be the more appropriate term as ‘they are basic, perhaps universal human tendencies from which sins result… the vice of greed gives birth to the sin of theft’ (Schimmel: Seven Deadly Sins (1997)).
